Fall is a wonderful time of year to run an Alpha course. Here is a checklist to help you prepare!
  1. PRAY. This is the first step to a successful Alpha experience. Ask God to guide this important planning phase. Consider praying for your upcoming Alpha course during Sunday services. This is an excellent time to start a prayer ministry team. Alpha USA offers prayer ministry training resources to help build a prayer ministry team for the Alpha course and your church as a whole.

  2. EDUCATE. Teach your congregation the basics of Alpha. Host "An Introduction to Alpha" session after Sunday services. The knowledge of Alpha will enable the church to support Alpha through prayer and inviting guests.

  3. EXTEND INVITATIONS. Encourage your Alpha team and congregation to talk about Alpha in their daily lives and invite their friends, family, co-workers, etc. Alpha USA has brochures and invitations designed to get potential guests interested in attending Alpha!

  4. ADVERTISE. Plan your publicity campaign. Write and submit articles for the church bulletin and local paper. Hang posters in full view of everyone who uses your church facilities. Alpha USA has pamphlets, posters and banners to help promote your Alpha course!

  5. TRAIN YOUR TEAM. The most successful Alpha courses take time to train their small group leaders. Alpha USA provides two essential resources for Leaders training, The Alpha Course Small Group Leaders Training DVD and The Alpha Course Leaders Guides.

  6. ARRANGE THE WEEKEND AWAY. The Alpha weekend away occurs during week 8 of the course. Your Alpha team should begin discussion the weekend away by week 3; giving guests time to plan. Be certain your team can provide all the basic information by week 3; when, where, transportation and cost.

  7. PLAN THE MEALS. Each Alpha course begins with sharing a meal. Decide how your church will handle meal preparation. The Alpha Cookbook is full of tried and tested recipes for groups. Each recipe in the Alpha Cookbook gives instructions for groups of 10, 30 and 100 so you can adapt them to your size of Alpha course.

  8. INVENTORY YOUR SUPPLIES. Do you have enough Alpha Course Manuals for the guests, does each Team Leader have a Alpha Course Leaders Guide, and is there enough Why Jesus? booklets for the first few nights, does your Alpha Director have the all-important Alpha Directors Handbook? Call 1-800-DO-ALPHA or order on-line to make certain you have all the necessary supplies for your course.

  9. REGISTER YOUR COURSE ON THE ALPHA COURSE DIRECTORY. Click here and follow the instructions to register your course.

  10. ATTEND AN ALPHA CONFERENCE OR TRAINING EVENT. The conference covers all the principles and practicalities of the Alpha course and gives churches an opportunity to network and worship together. www.alphaconferences.org has a list of upcoming Alpha conferences.

  11. ACCESS THE "BUILDING BETTER ALPHA COURSES" LIBRARY. The library is free and bursting with ideas on topics like how to attract more people to your Alpha course, build a prayer team, improve listening skills for small group Leaders. Our hope is that by making these resources available to you, they will help you build a more vibrant, outwardly-focused Alpha course and a better equipped Alpha leadership team. Access is available through registration on the Alpha USA website.

God Bless you and your Alpha courses,
